Akan Day Names

The Akan people of Ghana (Twi) frequently name their children after the day of the week they were born and the order in which they were born. These names have spread through West Africa, from Benin/Dahomey (Fon) and Togo (Ewe) to Cote d'Ivoire (Baoule), and throughout the African diaspora.

For example, Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, was named for being born on a Saturday (Kwame). The seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, was named for being born on a Friday (Kofi).

The Asante Umbrella

The Asante, an Akan people, are especially noted for these objects, gold plated or gold cast.  An often neglected item of regalia is the umbrella, though its ubiquity in West Africa has been noted by many European and Arab chroniclers, explorers, and political envoys.  The umbrella remains an important political emblem, particularly for chiefs.
